about rop

Premature infants that are born prior to 34 weeks of gestation (6 weeks before their due date) are at increased risk of developing various health complications when compared to infants that are born full-term (37-40weeks of gestation). One such risk is Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a disorder of the developing retinal blood vessels in the eye. ROP is the leading cause of childhood blindness in premature babies that are born too soon or those with low birth weight. In India, babies who are born less than 2000 grams (2 kgs) or 6 weeks before their due date (34 weeks of gestation) are at risk of developing ROP.

ROP Services at Drishti Center for Advanced Eye Care:

At Drishti Center for Advanced Eye Care, we are committed to providing world-class care for premature infants at risk of ROP, ensuring that every child receives the best possible chance for healthy vision and a brighter future.

  • Early Detection: Screening for ROP is crucial for premature infants, typically beginning within the first few weeks after birth. Early detection helps identify the condition at its earliest stages, allowing for timely intervention.
  • High-Risk Monitoring: Infants born prematurely or with low birth weight are at higher risk and require frequent screenings to monitor the progression of ROP.
  • Fundus Examination: Our specialists use specialized tools like indirect ophthalmoscopy and retinal cameras to examine the retina and detect abnormal blood vessel growth.
  • Retinal Imaging: We utilize advanced imaging technologies to monitor the retina in detail, helping to identify signs of ROP and assess the stage of the disease.
  • Assessment of Severity: ROP is categorized into stages, and our experts assess the extent of retinal damage to determine the best course of action for treatment.
  • Monitoring Progression: Regular follow-ups and screenings are essential to monitor the progression of ROP and to make informed decisions regarding treatment.
  •
  • Laser Photocoagulation Therapy: This is the most common treatment for severe ROP. It involves using a laser to treat the abnormal blood vessels in the retina to prevent them from growing further and causing retinal detachment.
  • Anti-VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) Injections: Anti-VEGF medications, such as bevacizumab (Avastin), may be injected into the eye to block the growth of abnormal blood vessels in cases of severe ROP.
  • Cryotherapy: In certain cases, cryotherapy (freezing treatment) may be used to treat the peripheral retina and prevent further damage caused by abnormal blood vessel growth.
  • Surgical Intervention: In advanced cases of ROP, where retinal detachment or significant scarring occurs, surgical intervention may be required to reattach the retina and restore vision.
  •
  • Continuous Monitoring: Regular follow-up appointments are essential for infants diagnosed with ROP, even after treatment. Our team monitors retinal development and ensures that any recurrence or complications are detected and treated early.
  • Visual Development Tracking: Monitoring the visual development of the infant is crucial, and we offer ongoing support and assessment to ensure optimal outcomes.
  •
  • Information and Support: We understand that the diagnosis of ROP can be overwhelming for parents. Our team provides thorough counseling, explaining the condition, treatment options, and long-term visual outcomes.
  • Guidance on Early Intervention: Parents are educated on the importance of early screenings and follow-up care, along with advice on how to manage and monitor their child’s visual development after treatment.

about rop

What is Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)?

ROP is a potentially sight-threatening condition that affects the retina of premature infants. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina, which can lead to retinal detachment and, if untreated, can cause blindness. ROP is more common in babies born before 31 weeks of gestation or with a low birth weight.

ROP – Patient Process Flow

If your child had a premature birth (born more than 12 weeks early) and/or had a low birth weight (less than 2 kgs) and has not been screened for ROP in the NICU, you should schedule an appointment with our pediatric retina specialist to get the infant’s eyes checked immediately. Your initial consultation with the doctor will approximately take 2 hours if you do not require cross-consultation and up to 4 hours if you require cross-consultation. During your consultation, our doctors and counsellors will determine the best course of action for your infant’s visual needs, go over the risks and benefits of treatment, and help you choose the best procedure that is suitable for preserving and improving the child’s vision.
